La storia della Biblioteca di Alessandria e la letteratura che su di essa è fiorita costituiscono un punto di partenza imprescindibile per tutti coloro che intendono ripercorrere le vie della trasmissione della storiografia classica dall’antichità sino ad oggi. E questo non soltanto perché la filologia alessandrina ha posto le prime basi scientifiche dell’edizione dei testi, ma anche perché in quell’ambiente si delinearono le caratteristiche fondamentali di ogni fenomeno bibliotecario, inteso sia nel senso letterale del termine (cioè di collezione libraria) che in quello più ampio e metaforico di organizzazione del sapere.

Humanities Hackathon on editing Athenaeus and on the Reinvention of the Edition in a Digital Space

The University of Leipzig will host a hackathon that addresses two basic tasks. On the one hand, we will focus upon the challenges of creating a digital edition for the Greek author Athenaeus, whose work cites more than a thousand earlier sources and is one of the major sources for lost works of Greek poetry and prose. At the same time, we use the case Athenaeus to develop our understanding of to organize a truly born-digital edition, one that not only includes machine actionable citations and variant readings but also collations of multiple print editions, metrical analyses, named entity identification, linguistic features such as morphology, syntax, word sense, and co-reference analysis, and alignment between the Greek original and one or more later translations.

Chi studia l’antichità conosce Gregory Crane anche quando non ne rammenta il nome, non per quello che ha scritto ma per quello che ha reso possibile scrivere. Crane è il direttore del Perseus Project, una biblioteca digitale che libera gli studiosi dal microcosmo chiuso e inaccessibile della monografia accademica, permettendo loro di lavorare sui classici in forma ipertestuale e stratificata, per esempio così.

Il Prof. Gregory Crane, direttore del Progetto Perseus, presso la Tufts University di Boston, USA, esporrà la propria attività ormai trentennale sull’uso del computer nella ricerca e nella formazione delle discipline classiche. Particolare attenzione sarà dedicata agli sviluppi futuri in un ambito più vasto, che potremmo ormai definire delle Humanities, o Scienze umane in generale, di fronte all’enorme sviluppo del web, della tecnologia digitale, dei nuovi apparati per la lettura dei libri in formato digitale.
Seguirà un intervento di Bruce Robertson, Dip. di Studi Classici, Mount Allison University, Sackville, NB, Canada che opera nel settore dell’OCR (riconoscimento automatico dei caratteri) per la trascrizione di opere della grecità classica.

From Wired a detailed report on the Version Variation Visualization Project and their first prototype Translation Array.
A team at Swansea University has developed an online tool that allows researchers to compare multiple translations of Shakespeare at the same time to see how much they vary.
The platform can be used for any text, but has been demonstrated with Act 1, Scene 3 of Shakespeare’s Othello, where the eponymous hero gives a persuasive speech about his courtship of Desdemona to her disapproving father Brabantio and others. Users can compare the original base English text (Michael Neill’s OUP edition) with any one of 37 different German editions, dating from 1766 to 2010 — something that the team calls a “translation array”.
